Heritage Icons Photography Auction

Heritage Auctions has unveiled a treasure trove of autographed photographs in its latest Icons Photography Auction, featuring a lineup that will surely excite sports card enthusiasts. At the forefront is a mesmerizing 1948 image of basketball maestro George Mikan, artfully reflecting his appearance on the revered 1948 Bowman rookie card. This historic 8×10 Type 1 photograph immortalizes Mikan in his prime, adorned with his signature in striking blue ink, anticipated to command a price exceeding $20,000.

The theme of signed vintage photos continues to weave its magic throughout the auction. A captivating late 1940s snapshot of Cleveland Browns’ luminary Otto Graham, mirroring his iconic 1950 Bowman Football rookie card, bears his distinctive autograph. Similarly, an autographed 1949 photo of Jackie Robinson receiving his Silver Bat in recognition of clinching the National League batting title, during the same year he secured the MVP title, promises historical significance. This exquisite Type I photograph, affectionately dedicated to “Jeff,” adds a personal touch to the auction.

Furthermore, a poignant 1957 portrayal of Robinson bidding adieu to his locker at Ebbets Field as he bid farewell to his baseball career adds another layer of emotion. The image portrays Robinson’s Dodgers cap, home jersey, fielder’s glove, cleats, and equipment bag, alongside two treasured bats, one belonging to Gil Hodges. This evocative piece is poised to attract bids exceeding $10,000.

Not to be outdone, a photo believed to be the inspiration for Willie Mays’ illustrious 1952 Topps card, embellished with Mays’ autograph from the 1990s, is also a highlight of the auction.

With a diverse collection of over 150 vintage images, some tracing back over a century, the catalog presents a visual journey through sports history. A standout piece is a snapshot from the 1919 World Series featuring Black Sox pitcher Eddie Cicotte and Reds’ pitcher Dutch Reuther partaking in a sportsmanlike handshake before a significant game at Redland Field in Cincinnati. Complete with its original paper caption and stamps on the reverse, this artifact is set to kick off with a starting bid of $8,000.

The auction further showcases rookie portraits of illustrious figures such as Hank Aaron (1954), Jack Nicklaus (1962), and Pete Maravich (1970), along with numerous glimpses into the lives of baseball icons Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, among other pre-war sports luminaries.

Running until June 13, this auction offers a remarkable blend of sports history captured through the lens of photography. With a plethora of iconic images on display, collectors and aficionados have the rare chance to acquire a tangible piece of sporting heritage.
