Arturs Silovs: Rising Star in Upper Deck Series 2 Young Guns

Arturs Silovs, a name that was once seen as just another prospect in the Vancouver Canucks’ system, has quickly risen to prominence, capturing the attention of hockey fans and card collectors alike. While much of the buzz surrounding the Upper Deck Series 2 Young Guns cards focused on talents like Connor Bedard, Silovs emerged as a surprise standout, showcasing his skills in the most unexpected of circumstances.

Initially slated to spend more time honing his craft in the AHL, Silovs found himself thrust into the limelight due to injuries to key goaltenders Thatcher Demko and Casey deSmith. What followed was a series of standout performances that defied expectations and solidified his place as a rising star in the NHL. One particular highlight was his performance against the Nashville Predators, where he made an impressive 42 saves in a single game, a feat that only a select few Canucks goalies have achieved in away playoff games.

Despite the Canucks eventually bowing out to the Oilers in Game 6, Silovs’s contributions between the pipes did not go unnoticed. His journey to the NHL was paved with success in junior hockey with the Barrie Colts and on the international stage with HS Riga in Latvia. Despite flying under the radar in scouting reports, his talent shone through, leading to his selection by Vancouver in the sixth round of the 2019 NHL Draft.

Silovs continued to make waves on the international scene, with standout performances at the World U18 Championships and the 2023 IIHF World Championships, where he played a pivotal role in helping Latvia secure a historic bronze medal. His achievements not only cemented his status as a national hero in Latvia but also as a promising and talented goaltender in the world of hockey.

In the realm of hockey card collecting, Silovs’s sudden rise to fame has sparked a surge in interest in his rookie cards, particularly the coveted Young Guns and Canvas Young Guns. Collectors have been quick to snap up these cards, with his Young Guns Red Outburst variant recently selling for an impressive $263. His presence in other Upper Deck releases and non-licensed cards from the IIHF tournaments has further expanded his appeal, especially among fans in Europe.

As the Vancouver Canucks look to the future, decisions loom regarding Silovs’s role with the team. Will he settle in as a reliable backup to Demko, or could he potentially become a valuable trade asset? One thing is certain—Silovs’s unexpected rise from AHL prospect to NHL standout has not only made him a pivotal player for the Canucks but also a sought-after figure in the ever-growing world of hockey card collecting.
