The auction’s crown jewel, a pristine Mickey Mantle card numbered 280 and graded PSA 10 for its flawless condition, drove fervent bidding wars, ultimately commanding an eye-watering $235,234. This particular card, showcasing the iconic New York Yankees slugger, underscored the enduring appeal and investment potential of vintage sports cards in near-perfect condition.
Enthusiasm at the auction wasn’t limited to the Mantle card. Collectors also showed hefty interest in other legendary figures of the diamond. For instance, a Hank Aaron card swung to an impressive $157,381, and a Johnny Bench rookie card caught $64,028. For instance, a 1997 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems card featuring basketball legend Michael Jordan, and numbered 067 out of 100, vaulted to $303,842—one of the highest sums in the auction. This card, graded PSA 5 for its condition, highlighted Jordan’s enduring legacy and the high stakes involved in collecting rare sports cards.
Historical pieces were also at play, such as a 1960s American League “All-Star” team photograph and various Topps baseball sets from the 1960s and 1970s. Each fetched high prices, further underlining the robust interest in American sports history’s tangible remnants.
