Legendary Red Auerbach’s Celtics Memorabilia on Auction Block

Red Auerbach, the renowned coach who led the Boston Celtics to nine NBA championships in just eleven years, has left a lasting legacy within the basketball community. Now, fans and collectors alike have an extraordinary opportunity to own a piece of history as items from Auerbach’s most successful season, as well as personal memorabilia from his illustrious Hall of Fame career, are up for auction by Heritage Auctions. The esteemed Platinum Night event will showcase this collection, consigned by the Auerbach family, and it features several standout items that have never been seen before.

The highlight of the collection is Auerbach’s 1965 NBA championship ring, a symbol of the Celtics’ remarkable 62-18 record season under his guidance. This ring, accompanied by Auerbach’s Coach of the Year Award and his personal league championship trophy from the same season, represents the pinnacle of his coaching achievements. Additionally, the auction will feature the ring Auerbach received as the general manager of the Celtics’ 1984 championship team, which is expected to fetch a price upwards of $100,000.

The 1965 championship season holds a special place in history not just for its stellar record, but also for a groundbreaking decision made by Auerbach. It was during this season that Auerbach decided to start five African-American players, marking the first time in NBA history that a team would do so. The significance of this team was further acknowledged when it was voted one of the NBA’s ten greatest teams of all time in 1996. The 1965 championship ring and trophy are estimated to be sold for $80,000 and $30,000 respectively, while the Coach of the Year award is also expected to attract significant interest from collectors.

Among the more personal items up for auction is a 1940s Washington Capitols team jacket, believed to have been worn by Auerbach during his early coaching days. The jacket is signed by Auerbach, adding another layer of authenticity and charm to the piece. Additionally, the auction includes a unique collection of Auerbach’s smoking pipes, complete with a stand and humidor, giving fans a glimpse into the personal side of the legendary coach.

Other notable items on the auction block include two signed 1960-61 team photos, a 1981 Celtics championship watch, autographed photos of Auerbach with Bill Russell, a 1960s photo of Bob Cousy signed to Auerbach, and various championship rings and jewelry pieces given to Auerbach’s wife and family.

This auction follows a previous sale of Auerbach items in 2011, continuing to provide enthusiasts with the opportunity to own a piece of basketball history. Bidding for these rare and historic items will conclude on Friday, February 25, offering a unique chance for collectors and fans to celebrate the enduring legacy of one of the NBA’s most revered figures, Red Auerbach.
